The turnaround Compton College women's basketball team's 2025-26 season continues after the Coyotoes have won three straight games in South Coast Conference South Division play.
Compton, 12-9 record overall, is a sparkling 5-1 in SCC action and its current streak came after falling to state #22 and current division leader Long Beach City, 66-56, on Jan. 28.
The Coyotes are 5-1 in the SCC South race, trailing the Vikings (5-0) in second place. It's the most conference victories by a Compton team since 2005-06 when as part of the SCC North Division it finished 6-2.
The 12 victories overall is the most since the progam won 15 in the 2007-08 season. With four games remaining, Compton has an opportunity to match that mark under head coach Ollie Brent, who is responsible for the resurgence of Coyotes basketball this season in just his first year at the college.
On Feb. 6, Compton got past host El Camino, 48-42, pulling away late in the contest. The Coyotes led 21-20 at halftime, but the Warriors grabbed a 34-31 advantage after three quarter. State-leading rebounder Allahya Drakes' jump shot gave the squad the lead for good, 37-36, with 6:24 remaining.
Drakes tops all California Community College players with an average of 16.1 boards per game. Against El Camino, she scored 11 points and pulled down 21 rebounds, the sixth team she has reached at least 20 in a contest.
Kaniya Madlock scored a game-high 15 points with four assists and Marylou Davis added 11 points and seven rebounds.
On Feb. 4, the Coyotes rallied from down eight points in the fourth quarter to beat host Los Angeles Southwest, 75-69. With 2:56 to go, Compton still trailed 69-64, but a spirited 11-0 run gave the squad a hard-fought road victory. The star in this one was Davis, who scored her team's final nine points. She made back-to-back layups for a 70-69 lead with two minutes left.
Davis finished with a team season-high 37 points as she was 12-for-24 from the field and 13-for-15 from the free throw line (87 percent accuracy). She added nine rebounds and five assists. Drakes recorded 16 points and grabbed 16 off the boards while Amiah Honores tallied 13 points. Off the bench, both DeArvinia Watts and Rachel Fraser reached double digits in rebounds with 10 each.
At home on Jan. 30, Davis again sparked a late rally as her 33 points helped the Coyotes down LA Harbor, 78-73. The Seahawks led by five, 61-56, early in the fourth quarter and went ahead 70-68 on a 3-pointer by Dereon Conant with two minutes to go. Davis drove for a layup to tie it. In the final minute, Drakes made a steal and hit a free throw for the lead, then Madlock drained a trey with 34 seconds left. Drakes added three more free throws to seal it.
Drakes finished with 16 points and 20 boards, Andrea Hinton scored 12 points, Madlock dished out eight helpers, and Watts provided big inside play off the bench with five points and 15 rebounds.
In the LBCC loss, Madlock led the Coyotes with 15 points while Drakes contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 11), Compton travels to Cerritos College for a 7 p.m. game. The Coyotes won their first encounter in division play, 45-30, back on Jan. 23
